Middlesex secured their place in the knockout stages of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup with an emphatic 87-run victory over the Derbyshire Falcons at the OurCoop County Ground. The win was anchored by a commanding 109-run performance from captain Ben Geddes, who dismantled the bowling attack with seven sixes during his 93-ball innings.
The visitors set a formidable target of 327 for 6, bolstered by a crucial 156-run third-wicket partnership between Geddes and Max Holden, who contributed 65. Joe Cracknell provided a late flurry with an unbeaten 44 from 31 balls, while Zafar Gohar added a brief but effective cameo. Earlier in the innings, Middlesex lost Josh de Caires and Nathan Fernandes cheaply, but the middle-order recovery ensured the Group B leaders maintained control.
In response, the depleted Derbyshire side, missing the injured Ben Aitchison and Wayne Madsen, struggled to build momentum. Despite a 74-run stand between Caleb Jewell, who scored 54, and Martin Andersson, the Falcons collapsed from 82 for 1 to 240 all out. Zafar Gohar was instrumental in the collapse, claiming 3 for 35, while Henry Brookes took two wickets in consecutive overs to remove Brooke Guest and Jewell.
Although Luis Reece and Ross Whiteley attempted to revive the chase with a 59-run partnership, the rising required rate proved too difficult to overcome. Noah Cornwell dismissed Whiteley and later Reece to seal the win for Middlesex. Derbyshire’s elimination from the competition had already been confirmed following their loss to Yorkshire on Friday, leading them to draft in England spinner Shoaib Bashir for this fixture.
