A series of large-scale Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine over the past 24 hours has left 13 people dead and approximately 90 others injured, according to local authorities. The intensified bombardment highlights Ukraine's ongoing struggle with a critical shortage of interceptors for its US-made Patriot systems, which remain the only air defense weapons in the country capable of neutralizing ballistic missiles.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that four people were killed in the Kyiv capital region, including a three-year-old boy and his grandparents, during one of the strikes. A separate attack on civilian infrastructure in the same region resulted in an additional fatality. Addressing the situation on Telegram, Zelenskyy emphasized the urgent need for further international support, calling for new sanctions to impede Russia's ballistic missile production and requesting additional anti-ballistic systems, including Patriot, SAMP/T, NASAMS, and HAWK, alongside F-16 fighter jets.
In Kharkiv, the country's second-largest city, regional head Oleh Syniehubov reported that a Russian missile struck a high-rise apartment building in the Saltivskyi district, killing three individuals and leaving 37 injured. Further casualties were reported in frontline cities such as Sumy, Kherson, and Donetsk. In the Black Sea port of Odesa, local administration head Oleh Kiper stated that “dozens of missiles and drones” targeted the city and surrounding areas, resulting in eight injuries.
Zelenskyy has spent months lobbying global partners for more Patriot systems, noting that their availability has been impacted by the war in Iran. In the absence of sufficient supplies, the Ukrainian president has explored alternatives, including producing Patriot ammunition domestically or seeking approval from Elon Musk to utilize the Starlink satellite system to guide strikes against missile launchers located inside Russia.
Meanwhile, Moscow’s defense ministry claimed its forces successfully hit drone warehouses in the Kharkiv region, as well as fuel depots and military supply stores in Odesa. The ministry further stated that Russian air defenses intercepted 153 Ukrainian drones overnight, including those over the Black Sea, the Azov Sea, and Russian-occupied Crimea.
Reciprocal strikes from Ukraine have continued to target Russian energy infrastructure and logistics. In the Belgorod region, authorities reported that Ukrainian drone attacks damaged 29 apartment blocks, five private homes, and various administrative and commercial facilities. Additionally, in the city of Novorossiysk, mayor Andrey Kravchenko confirmed that drone debris struck two enterprises and a private residence. Novorossiysk is home to a major fuel terminal that serves as a vital link for global oil markets and has been a frequent target for Kyiv in its efforts to cripple the Kremlin’s energy-driven war economy.
