A significant fire broke out at the British Army's Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire, England, on Thursday night. The blaze, which is believed to have started in the Gaza Barracks—the home of the Light Dragoons light cavalry regiment—prompted a large-scale emergency response.
The North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service reported that they were alerted to the incident by on-site personnel who discovered a fire within an accommodation block. Upon arrival, emergency crews found the building to be well alight. To combat the flames, the service deployed multiple crews, additional resources, and an aerial ladder.
The fire was brought under control during the night, and firefighters had successfully cleared the scene by approximately 2:40 am on Friday. While the immediate threat was neutralized, the fire service stated that on-site personnel would maintain a watching brief throughout the night, with a formal fire investigation scheduled for later in the morning.
One individual was transported to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalation as a result of the incident. Local councillor Kevin Foster expressed his concern for the safety of those at the camp, including military personnel, their families, and the responding emergency services, stating, "My immediate concern is for the safety and wellbeing of everyone at the camp, including our military personnel, their families and the emergency services responding to the incident." He added, "I would like to thank our emergency services for their response and hope that everyone involved is safe."
Catterick Garrison also houses the British Army's Infantry Training Centre, which serves as a training ground for all Infanteers and Royal Armoured Corps troops, alongside two infantry training battalions.
