The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is clinging to a faint hope of hosting India for a white-ball series this September, though current political developments suggest the prospect is fading rapidly. While BCB officials continue to hope for a positive outcome, the atmosphere has soured significantly following recent political events, including a virtual press conference held by ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina from Delhi on August 5.
Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed expressed strong disapproval on August 8, stating that India cannot expect a friendly relationship with Bangladesh while allowing the ousted leader to make statements from Delhi that allegedly undermine the country's democracy and incite instability. These remarks have been viewed by BCB insiders as a critical blow to the potential for the upcoming cricket series.
The board had previously been optimistic about improving relations with the Indian cricketing authorities, particularly after a period of strain caused by Bangladesh’s decision to withdraw from the ICC T20 World Cup earlier this year. While security concerns were officially cited for that withdrawal, insiders have confirmed that the decision was driven by political directives from the then-Yunus-led government. Following the transition to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party after the February general election, there was renewed optimism that the cricketing relationship would mend. BCB president Tamim Iqbal had been actively working to facilitate the visit, recognizing the immense financial and brand value of hosting a team of India's stature.
However, the combination of the foreign ministry's dissatisfaction and the Home Minister's recent comments has left the board in a difficult position. One top BCB official, speaking anonymously, admitted that the series now seems like a distant dream. The official noted that the board has not received any response from the Indian side, and with the August 28 deadline for finalizing plans approaching, time is running out. While the board maintains its public hope until an official cancellation is issued, the internal consensus is that the series is becoming increasingly impossible to execute.
