Ajinkya Rahane has officially joined the Amsterdam Flames as a marquee player for the inaugural season of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL). This move marks the former Indian captain's first-ever overseas T20 opportunity, coming just eight days after he announced his retirement from both international and Indian Premier League cricket.
Although widely recognized for his success in Test cricket, Rahane brings significant T20 experience to the European league. Throughout his career, he has participated in 308 T20 matches, accumulating 7,968 runs at an average of 30.29 and a strike rate of 126.77. His T20 record includes 56 half-centuries and two centuries.
Reflecting on his new role, Rahane expressed his desire to contribute to the growth of cricket in Europe. He stated that the sport has given him much and that he believes players have a responsibility to leave the game in a stronger position. He noted that he was particularly impressed by the Amsterdam Flames' ambition to create a lasting impact both on and off the field, adding that he looks forward to working with the management to inspire the next generation of players.
Steve Waugh, the former Australian captain who serves as the co-founder and Chief Cricket Officer for the Flames, welcomed the addition of Rahane to the squad. Waugh praised Rahane’s professionalism, resilience, humility, and leadership, highlighting the respect he has earned throughout his career. According to Waugh, Rahane’s composure under pressure will be essential in helping establish a winning culture within the franchise.
Rahane will be part of a star-studded lineup at the Amsterdam Flames, which already includes Steve Smith, Tim David, Michael Bracewell, and Mitchell Marsh. Marsh is set to lead the team as captain when the ETPL 2026 season kicks off on August 26.
