Sydney Towle, a social media influencer who utilized her platform to document her reality of living with a rare and aggressive cancer, has passed away at the age of 26. Towle was diagnosed with stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma, a rare bile duct cancer that rarely impacts individuals in her age group, when she was 23 years old.
Over the past three years, Towle became a voice for the cancer community, sharing her daily life and health challenges with a large audience. Her candid videos on TikTok and Instagram attracted millions of views as she worked to raise awareness about rare cancers and the importance of self-advocacy. Her family confirmed the news of her passing on her social media channels one day after her death.
In a video message shared on TikTok, Towle’s brother, Austin, appeared alongside their mother to announce that she had passed away peacefully after a nearly three-year-long battle with the disease. In a statement, her family expressed their pride in how hard Sydney fought and emphasized her commitment to sharing her journey. They noted that she was deeply passionate about promoting self-advocacy for patients and stated they intend to honor her legacy in every way possible.
The late influencer had been transparent about her medical hardships, including a series of videos posted in May from the hospital. At that time, she revealed that her cancer had spread to her peritoneum, the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and covers internal organs. Shortly before that, on 19 May, she shared an emotional account of a conversation with her oncologist, who recommended she begin end-of-life care. Towle chose to refuse the suggestion and instead sought care from a new specialist.
Despite her declining health, Towle managed to fulfill a personal dream shortly after that consultation. She walked the runway in a swimsuit for The Chemo Club x Post Swim show during Miami Swim Week, an event dedicated to celebrating bodies after cancer. Since the announcement of her death, thousands of followers and fellow influencers have shared tributes, honoring her strength and the significant impact she made on those who followed her journey.
