During a recent Test series against New Zealand, where McCullum served as the red-ball head coach, Brook held vice-captaincy responsibilities. However, when Ben Stokes was suspended for the second Test due to a breach of curfew, the leadership was entrusted to Joe Root. Following the series loss and the retirement of Stokes, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) opted to appoint Root for a second stint as captain rather than elevating Brook.
McCullum, who maintains a close relationship with Brook, emphasized that while he looks forward to helping Brook develop into a complete leader, he believes the current appointment of Joe Root is the right move for the team. As McCullum transitions away from his role as the red-ball coach, he expressed strong support for his successor, Stephen Fleming. McCullum described Fleming as a trusted colleague and a superior version of himself, stating that the ECB made an outstanding decision in securing his commitment to English cricket.
The two coaches maintain frequent communication and share a unified vision for the success of English cricket across all three formats. While Marcus Trescothick is set to handle coaching duties for the upcoming home Test series against Pakistan in August and September, Fleming will officially take over the reins for the tour of South Africa in December 2026.
