Shubman Gill, the regular Test captain for India, is missing the first day of the team's only tour match in Sri Lanka. The three-day fixture against a Sri Lanka Cricket XI is proceeding with vice-captain KL Rahul stepping in to lead the side in Gill's absence. According to a statement from the BCCI, Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during a training session held on Thursday. As a precautionary measure, the medical team has advised that he will not take the field for the first day of the warm-up, though they continue to monitor his progress to determine if he can participate on the second or third days.
The Sri Lanka Cricket XI won the toss and elected to bowl first, leaving the Indians to focus on batting during the remainder of the contest. In other squad updates, B Sai Sudharsan has yet to arrive in Sri Lanka as he continues to recover from a toe injury sustained during the India A tour held between late June and early July. He is expected to join the squad prior to the first Test match.
Gill’s injury contributes to a growing list of concerns for the Indian side ahead of their two-Test series. Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the tour entirely, with the medical team recommending rest for a lingering left knee issue that persisted following the T20 World Cup. Auqib Nabi has been named as his replacement. Furthermore, allrounders Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy are unavailable due to hamstring and quadriceps injuries, while Washington Sundar will miss at least the first Test with a hamstring issue. Akash Deep also remains out of consideration while recovering from stress reactions in his back.
Reflecting on the recurring injury challenges, Gill previously noted on July 19, following an ODI series loss in England, that such setbacks complicate team selection and performance. He expressed concern that fielding players who are not fully fit creates significant tactical difficulties, particularly regarding bowling rotations. Gill highlighted a broader worry that these persistent fitness issues could negatively impact India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup in southern Africa. The upcoming Test series in Sri Lanka, which marks India's return to the World Test Championship cycle, is set to begin on August 15 in Galle, followed by the second Test on August 23 at the SSC in Colombo.
Elaborating on Gill's condition, the BCCI said, "As a precautionary measure, he will not take the field on Day 1 of the warm-up game against SLC XI. The BCCI medical team is monitoring his progress."
"It becomes a little difficult that you come to the ground on the morning and you come to know a player has a niggle, then it's almost like do you want to take a chance," Gill had said. "Some player is 80% fit, you are playing with five bowlers and if this player comes out after bowling five overs, then who will bowl?
