Lancashire has secured the services of Pakistan spinner Noman Ali for the final six matches of the County Championship season. The 39-year-old arrives at Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground as an overseas reinforcement to strengthen the club's spin options for the remainder of the competition.
Noman will also remain in the country to provide potential cover for Pakistan's Test squad. While he was recently replaced by Ali Usman for the tour of the West Indies, Noman remains a standby option should Usman or offspinner Sajid Khan suffer injuries during Pakistan's upcoming three-Test series in England, which begins in Leeds on August 19.
Reflecting on his new role, Noman expressed his enthusiasm for experiencing English county cricket for the first time. He highlighted the prestige of the club, stating that he is eager to follow in the footsteps of Pakistan legend Wasim Akram, who enjoyed a long and celebrated tenure with Lancashire. Noman added that he is committed to making a significant impact for his new teammates both on and off the field.
Lancashire's director of cricket, Mark Chilton, praised the signing, describing Noman as a highly skillful and experienced operator. Chilton noted that the club had previously relied on homegrown spinners Tom Hartley and Arav Shetty, with Liam Livingstone and Australian Chris Green filling in for mid-season fixtures. The decision to bring in Noman reflects the club's desire to add a frontline, experienced overseas specialist for the crucial final stretch of the Championship.
Noman’s international career saw a resurgence in late 2024 when he took 20 wickets in two matches to help Pakistan overturn a 1-0 deficit against England to win the series 2-1. Chilton emphasized that Noman's red-ball record over the past few years makes him a vital addition who is expected to make a real difference for the side in their remaining matches.
