Annabel Sutherland proved to be the difference-maker for Sunrisers Leeds, as her composed batting display secured a five-wicket victory over London Spirit in The Women's Hundred. Chasing a target of 137, Sutherland anchored the innings and ultimately sealed the win with a decisive six off Nadine de Klerk when three runs were required from the final three balls.
The victory marked an end to a difficult losing streak for Leeds. The chase had moments of tension, particularly as the team stuttered near the finish line. After a solid 48-run partnership between Sutherland and Dani Gibson, the latter was dismissed by Katie George. Deepti Sharma also fell while attempting a big shot with 14 runs needed from nine balls. However, Sutherland remained a constant presence, supported by Jess Jonassen, who hit a crucial boundary at the start of the final set to swing the momentum back toward Leeds.
Earlier in the chase, openers Phoebe Litchfield and Bryony Smith provided a strong start, taking the side past 50 runs within 32 balls. Despite a brief collapse where Leeds lost three wickets in seven balls to slide to 59/3, the team maintained their focus. In the first innings, London Spirit struggled to maintain their momentum after a rain delay. At 89/1 after 50 balls, the team appeared well-placed, but the resumption of play triggered a collapse as they were eventually restricted to 136/7.
Grace Harris top-scored for London Spirit with 51, while Amy Jones contributed 24. Deepti Sharma was effective with the ball for Leeds, claiming 2-18, and Hannah Baker also chipped in with 2-21. Sutherland, who had earlier dismissed Marizanne Kapp with her cross-seam bowling, was named Player of the Match for her all-around brilliance. Katie George was the pick of the bowlers for Spirit, finishing with 3-25.
She had Jess Jonassen for company, batting at seven after a reshuffle pushed her down from her opening role.
Looping the ball with little speed, she played a role in silencing the middle order, claiming two and giving away just 18 runs.
