Chelsea are on the verge of finalizing a deal to sign Spanish left-back Pep Chavarria after making significant progress in talks with La Liga side Rayo Vallecano.
The Blues have been actively pursuing the 28-year-old defender for several weeks and are now close to reaching a complete agreement. Personal terms have already been agreed upon with Chavarria, leaving the two clubs to iron out the final details of the transfer. Once those negotiations are concluded, he is expected to undergo a medical before officially joining Xabi Alonso's squad.
Acquiring a left-back became a top priority for Chelsea following Marc Cucurella’s transfer to Real Madrid earlier this summer. Cucurella's departure left Jorrel Hato as the club's only senior natural option on the left side of defense, prompting the use of academy prospect Landon Emenalo during pre-season fixtures. Although Chelsea assessed several alternatives during the transfer window, Chavarria has consistently been viewed internally as their preferred solution.
Chavarria has built a strong reputation in Spain over the last four seasons, having moved to Rayo Vallecano from Real Zaragoza in 2022. He played an instrumental role in guiding his team to the Europa Conference League final last season, where they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Crystal Palace. Chelsea's recruitment team believes his defensive consistency and attacking energy make him an ideal fit for Alonso's tactical system.
Chelsea have been negotiating directly with Rayo Vallecano and are expected to secure the defender for a considerably lower fee. His arrival will add to an incredibly active summer transfer window at Stamford Bridge, which has already seen the arrivals of Morgan Rogers, Danny Welbeck, Maxence Lacroix, Jordan Henderson, and Marco Palestra. The Blues also previously secured Geovany Quenda, Denner, Dastan Satpaev, and Emmanuel Emegha as part of their long-term recruitment strategy.
With pre-season drawing to a close, Chelsea are keen to wrap up the transfer quickly. The expectation is that the Spaniard will provide immediate competition on the left flank while also helping to mentor younger defenders coming through the club’s academy.
