Chelsea have officially confirmed the acquisition of 22-year-old midfielder Valentin Barco from RC Strasbourg. The transfer, which follows a pre-agreement between the BlueCo clubs, sees the Argentine international commit his future to the west London side with a seven-year contract that runs until June 2033. Reports from France indicate that the transfer fee for the versatile player is in the region of €40 million.

Barco, who represented his country at the 2026 World Cup, is currently enjoying an extended holiday following his international commitments. He is expected to join the Chelsea squad just a few weeks before the new Premier League season kicks off on August 24. While the club has yet to confirm his official squad number, the number 32 shirt he wore at Strasbourg is currently vacant following the departure of Tyrique George to Everton.

The midfielder is set to reunite with several familiar faces at Stamford Bridge, including Enzo Fernandez, as well as former Strasbourg teammates Mike Penders, Mamadou Sarr, and Emegha. Barco bid farewell to his former club in a heartfelt Instagram post on May 18, expressing his gratitude to the fans, staff, and his teammates for their support during his tenure. He specifically thanked staff members Liam and Gary for their guidance in his development as a player.

Now that the signing has been confirmed, it is clear the club is continuing a wider recruitment strategy. Chelsea is also moving to secure Joao Pedro amid reported interest from Barcelona, and the club has closed the door on Barcelona to sign an alternative to Julian Alvarez. Additionally, Birmingham City and Derby County remain in a position to potentially spoil Cardiff City's transfer dream regarding Chelsea's Omari Kellyman.

Chelsea’s summer recruitment drive continues to expand beyond Barco, with the club also finalizing a deal for Jordan Henderson, who has reportedly passed his medical and is set to sign a two-year contract. Meanwhile, the club's pursuit of Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott remains ongoing, following a rejected bid believed to be in excess of £60 million, with uncertainty surrounding whether Chelsea will submit a revised offer.
