The top commander of US forces in Europe, Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, has reportedly issued a private warning to the Pentagon regarding a critical shortage of naval assets. According to reports, Grynkewich informed senior officials that current force levels are inadequate to sustain the defense of Israel against ballistic missile attacks. The general indicated that without the deployment of at least one additional Navy destroyer, he would be forced to prioritize the protection of the US homeland over the defense of Israel.
A US defense official characterized this warning as standard procedure, noting that senior commanders frequently alert the Pentagon when resource constraints lead to operational risks during periods of intense competition for limited weaponry and personnel. This development follows a five-month escalation in regional conflict, which has been exacerbated by the collapse of peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran. The sustained intensity of the conflict has reportedly depleted US stockpiles of essential defensive weapons.
Operational pressure on the Navy has been compounded by the ongoing blockade of Iranian ports, ordered by the Trump administration following Tehran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This action has significantly disrupted global trade and oil shipments. Historically, US destroyers stationed in the eastern Mediterranean have played a vital role in defending Israel, utilizing sophisticated missile systems and radar to intercept projectiles fired by Iran and Houthi forces in Yemen.
While the European Command manages these Mediterranean operations, it simultaneously remains responsible for maintaining military readiness against potential Russian threats to NATO territory. Currently, the Navy operates five destroyers based in Rota, Spain, with a sixth vessel anticipated to arrive later this year. However, officials stated that the ongoing operational pace has created significant maintenance challenges, which have further reduced the availability of these ships for deployment.
