Kent all-rounder Joey Evison has confirmed his departure from the club, agreeing to a new three-year contract with Sussex. Evison, who originally joined Kent in 2022 following his development at Nottinghamshire, played a key role in the team's Royal London Cup victory. However, his recent opportunities at the St Lawrence Ground have been limited, leading to a loss of his position in the County Championship side and a subsequent loan move to Leicestershire. In other roster news, Young, who had a three-match stint with the Bears in 2025, returns for the final six rounds of the Championship to strengthen the club's batting options.
Reflecting on the transition, Kent's director of cricket, Simon Cook, acknowledged the change in circumstances. He noted that after discussions with Evison and his representatives, it became clear the player was seeking a fresh challenge. Cook stated that while the club is disappointed to see him leave, the nature of professional sport remains fluid, and his exit provides space for other squad members to advance their own development. He added that Evison would always be welcome back at the club.
The move to Hove will see Evison reunite with Matt Walker, the recently appointed head coach at Sussex, while Paul Farbrace transitions into a part-time director of cricket role. Farbrace expressed his enthusiasm for the signing, describing Evison as a talented all-round cricketer who has been on the club's radar for some time. He emphasized that the player’s desire to improve and work hard makes this the ideal moment to bring him into the squad, noting that he expects him to make a significant impact across all formats of the game.
