Javier Bardem, who stars as the antagonist Max Cady in the Apple TV series Cape Fear, recently shared insights into his approach to the character. The series, which streams its finale this Friday, features Bardem as a man convicted of murdering his pregnant wife who seeks vengeance against the attorneys he holds responsible for his time behind bars. Bardem expressed that he aimed to provide a fresh interpretation of the role, which was previously defined by performances from Robert Mitchum and Robert De Niro.
The actor admitted that he was initially reluctant to take on the part. However, he reconsidered after realizing that over 30 years had passed since Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake, and that the acclaimed director was returning to the project as an executive producer. "I guess I have to do it," Bardem recalled thinking at the time.
Beyond his work on screen, Bardem also addressed his public advocacy for Palestinian rights. He acknowledged that he anticipated backlash for his stance and has heard reports that some professional projects may not have moved forward due to his views. Despite this, he noted that his ability to work in Spain provides him with a buffer, as he does not rely exclusively on American film productions. He remains committed to his public position, stating, "More and more people are thanking me and supporting me and encouraging me to keep on saying what I'm saying because they feel represented."
