The Trent Rockets claimed a comfortable nine-wicket victory over Welsh Fire at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Wednesday, securing their second consecutive win of the season and moving to the top of the points table. The Rockets successfully chased down the target of 123 with 28 balls to spare.
The foundation for the win was laid by a disciplined bowling performance from the New Zealand duo of Matt Henry and Mitchell Santner, who combined to take five wickets. After electing to bowl first, the Rockets made early breakthroughs, with Henry dismissing Phil Salt and Joe Root cheaply. The pace trio of Mohammad Amir, Craig Overton, and Henry proved difficult for the hosts to manage as they effectively utilized the two-paced nature of the pitch.
At the halfway mark, Welsh Fire had reached only 59, and their attempts to accelerate the scoring proved difficult. Between the mid-innings point, they lost three wickets, with Santner playing a key role. Jordan Cox provided a late spark for the Fire, hitting three successive sixes off Santner, though he was dismissed while attempting a fourth, caught by a diving Finn Allen at the cover boundary. Despite Cox’s 16-ball 33, which included four sixes, the hosts were restricted to 122 for 7.
In response, the Trent Rockets maintained a controlled chase. While Finn Allen took a moment to settle, Ben Duckett aggressively attacked the pace trio of Marco Jansen, Lockie Ferguson, and Chris Woakes, hitting seven boundaries in his first 22 balls. Allen eventually joined the scoring, striking Sam Cook for a six over long-on followed by another over mid-wicket. Although Rachin Ravindra trapped Allen leg-before for 33, the Rockets remained in full control. Duckett finished with an unbeaten 52 off 45 balls, while Tom Banton added a brisk 15-ball 31, including four boundaries and a six. Banton’s final boundary through extra cover sealed the win, marking the first defeat of the season for Welsh Fire.
