James Desborough, 40, has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted of a series of brutal murders. Mr Justice Saini, presiding at Winchester crown court, issued the rare whole-life order, describing the defendant as a highly dangerous individual who viewed his victims as "worthless."
The court heard that Desborough murdered two of his friends, Claudio Aquilino, 57, and Daniel Coleman, 43. After killing them, he dismembered their bodies and concealed the remains in woodland near a shack in south Cornwall where he occasionally resided off-grid. The victims, who suffered from long-term addictions, had previously shared a homeless hostel with Desborough in Newquay. While the prosecution noted that Desborough used the men’s money for drugs and alcohol following their deaths, the judge emphasized that the killer likely viewed them as vulnerable and unworthy of respect due to their chaotic personal lives.
The investigation into the case involved a massive 175-day search of the woods, requiring the efforts of over 700 officers and scientists. Devon and Cornwall police utilized resources from five additional forces to navigate the boggy, jungle-like terrain, at times wading through chest-high water. In a unique operation, authorities diverted a stream to sieve 300 metres of the riverbed, successfully recovering 1,900 burned bone fragments belonging to Aquilino and Coleman.
While awaiting his trial at Exeter prison, Desborough committed a third murder, strangling his 65-year-old cellmate, Steven Kempster, apparently because he was irritated by the man's snoring. During the investigation, Desborough reportedly told a forensic biologist that he had "particularly enjoyed the dismemberment scenes" from the television serial killer series Dexter. Mr Justice Saini concluded that the circumstances of the case were unique, noting that Desborough had no regard for the humanity of his victims.
