Rahmat Shah, recently appointed as the captain for Afghanistan’s Test and ODI teams, has stepped into his new leadership role with a clear vision for the squad's future. Having served as the vice-captain in both formats since 2021, Rahmat is no stranger to the responsibilities of the position. He expressed his gratitude to the Afghanistan Cricket Board for their trust and pledged to lead the team toward further success.
Reflecting on his approach, Rahmat highlighted that his primary goal is to foster a culture where players feel empowered. His philosophy centers on providing cricketers with the freedom and confidence to express their natural game. Looking toward upcoming international commitments, particularly with the World Cup less than a year away, he stressed that the team must adapt to modern scoring demands. Rahmat noted that to compete effectively in ICC tournaments, where conditions often favor batting, the team must develop the mindset and ability to consistently post scores exceeding 300 runs in ODI matches.
Regarding the upcoming series against Ireland, the captain intends to field his strongest possible side. He acknowledged that while Ireland is a formidable opponent, especially in their home conditions, the series serves as a vital opportunity to test combinations that will benefit the team in future competitions. To prepare for the World Cup, Rahmat plans to work on pitch preparation during home series that mimics South African conditions, helping the squad acclimatize to the expected playing environments.
On the international stage, Rahmat aims for Afghanistan to establish itself among the top five teams in white-ball cricket, building on previous rankings of seventh and eighth. In the Test format, the challenge is to achieve consistent performance and break into the top eight globally, which he believes requires a long-term commitment to strengthening domestic red-ball cricket.
Addressing the status of star all-rounder Rashid Khan, Rahmat confirmed that the team is managing his workload due to ongoing back issues. While Rashid’s contributions remain invaluable, medical advice has necessitated his rest from the longer format to prioritize his long-term career. Rahmat emphasized the necessity of developing other players to ensure the squad remains resilient in every situation, hoping for Rashid’s return to Test cricket once he fully recovers.
