President Donald Trump hosted separate meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with the White House characterizing the encounters as both positive and productive.
The two visiting leaders were in Washington to attend the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham, who was remembered by Trump as a giant of the US Senate and a prominent supporter of US aid to Ukraine.
During his session with Trump, President Zelensky focused on Kyiv's urgent need for American Patriot air defence missiles. Ukraine aims to utilize these systems to shield its cities from intensifying Russian ballistic missile and drone attacks.
Although no formal agreement was finalized during the closed-door discussions, Zelensky expressed gratitude to Trump for their collaborative efforts to protect Ukrainian lives.
He noted that the pair explored potential ideas to support his nation and discussed the importance of reinvigorating the diplomatic process. Additionally, Zelensky met with representatives from Lockheed Martin to review further cooperation and planned to engage with a bipartisan group of senators regarding upcoming legislation intended to sanction buyers of Russian oil and gas.
Following Zelensky's departure, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Trump at the White House. Their conversation centered heavily on the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The meeting occurred as US-Israel relations face strain due to differing perspectives on the war, with Trump having previously criticized Israel for its continued strikes in Lebanon and its disregard for ceasefire efforts.
Despite these recent tensions, the atmosphere appeared cordial, as evidenced by a photograph shared on Netanyahu's X account showing the two leaders smiling in the Oval Office.
Reflecting on the meeting, the prime minister described it as one of the best conversations he has had with the American president. Netanyahu told Israeli media that they reached an understanding regarding a shared goal to ensure Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons, among other objectives.
While the discussions between the leaders were extensive, the meetings concluded without any formal announcements regarding new military commitments.
"We also spoke about diplomacy," he wrote. "It's important that the diplomatic process be reinvigorated."
