Former Premier League winger Micky Gray has publicly urged Manchester United to pursue a transfer for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero. While the Argentina international is currently being eyed by both Arsenal and Chelsea, Gray believes the Red Devils should move for the player immediately.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Gray suggested that Romero would provide a significant boost to the Manchester United defense, specifically noting that he could form a formidable partnership with Lisandro Martinez. The pair previously played together for Argentina, including their success at the FIFA World Cup. Gray stated, "I would take him to Man United in a heartbeat. The chance to put Martinez and Romero back together as a pairing, whether you love or hate them, you know what you’re getting from them."
Gray acknowledged that Romero has faced disciplinary challenges, including red cards during his time at Tottenham, but argued that his positive contributions outweigh these concerns. He highlighted the defender's experience as a World Cup winner and finalist, as well as his past performance against Manchester United in the Europa League. "If you can just calm him down a little bit, there’s no doubt when he’s got quality, he’s a great centre half," Gray added.
Despite the potential interest from Manchester United, the path to signing Romero may be complicated. Although the defender has expressed a desire to leave Tottenham this summer, he has been linked to several top clubs, including Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Current reports suggest that Romero is nearing a move to Inter Milan, with the Serie A side having already agreed on personal terms. Inter is now working to finalize a fee with Tottenham, who are reportedly open to selling the defender if their valuation is met.
