San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is currently in recovery following a severe car accident that occurred in Palo Alto on July 14. The incident resulted in significant injuries for the coach, including a concussion, a broken nose, broken ribs, and a broken hand. While the news of the accident was not made public until July 25, when it was reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 49ers have been managing his recovery as he undergoes treatment for his concussion.
Official reports from the Palo Alto police have ruled out any influence of drugs or alcohol regarding the accident. However, a California public government record indicated that Shanahan was holding and operating a cell phone at the time of the collision. Under Vehicle Code 23123.5(a), holding and using a mobile device while driving is illegal and carries a $20 fine for first-time offenders, though Shanahan was not cited for this violation.
Despite the findings regarding cell phone usage, Shanahan has been cleared of any fault in the accident. Authorities determined that the collision was caused by another driver, a 21-year-old woman, who swerved into his lane. The other driver did not sustain any injuries.
In the aftermath of the crash, Shanahan has begun a limited return to his professional duties. He attended the second half of training camp at Levi's Stadium on Sunday, where he met with several players, including quarterback Brock Purdy. Purdy noted that he had been in contact with the coach via text message since the news broke and expressed his support, stating, "Just saw him on the field for the first time." 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir also emphasized the impact of having the head coach present during practice, noting, "You want to give it your best because your head coach is watching." Shanahan's work schedule is being limited by his injuries as he receives treatment for his concussion.
