Indian selectors are currently waiting for updated fitness reports from the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru before finalizing the national squad for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. The selection committee is expected to meet within the next 10 to 36 hours to determine the roster, with the availability of several key players serving as a primary focus. Among those under discussion are Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Akash Deep, and Anshul Kamboj.
While players like Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakaravarthy are currently at the CoE, they remain out of contention for the tour as they are restricted to white-ball cricket. More significantly, Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy appear to be ruled out of the selection process. Regarding Reddy, it is understood that team management is currently prioritizing him for white-ball cricket, meaning he is likely to return to action in September for India’s white-ball schedule, with a potential red-ball appearance not expected until November in New Zealand.
Washington Sundar, who has been a preferred choice under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill, is also facing uncertainty. The 26-year-old all-rounder is currently managing a hamstring injury. Despite his value as an off-spinner capable of batting in the top order—a skill set seen as vital for Sri Lankan pitches—there is no guarantee of his availability. A conditional selection for the second Test starting on August 23 remains a possibility, though it is considered a long shot.
Meanwhile, there is ambiguity surrounding Jasprit Bumrah's availability. While he is expected to join the CoE, the likelihood of his inclusion remains higher than his exclusion, as he has not played extensively since the IPL. The BCCI previously noted that Bumrah suffered an impact injury to his left knee while fielding in the second ODI in Cardiff, which resulted in reactive swelling and his absence from the final ODI at Lord’s, though the injury was not deemed serious. The selection meeting, originally slated for Tuesday, may be held earlier on Monday via an online session. It is expected that most players from last month's one-off Test against Afghanistan will retain their spots, with Ravidra Jadeja—who missed the New Chandigarh match—also in contention.
