Moscow-installed officials reported that Ukrainian attacks on holiday camps in the partly Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia region resulted in the deaths of 11 people. Yevgeny Balitsky, the Kremlin-installed regional head, stated that four children were among those killed, with an additional 16 people wounded. Ukraine has not yet provided a comment regarding the incident.
Simultaneously, authorities in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region confirmed that a Russian drone strike killed three people. Sumy regional head Oleh Hryhorov explained that the strike hit a civilian facility, triggering a large fire that claimed the lives of three individuals identified as drivers for the private Ukrainian courier service Nova Poshta. The Russian defense ministry claimed it had targeted a storage and launch site for Ukrainian drones in the same region.
These developments follow a major Russian assault near Kyiv on Friday, which resulted in at least 10 deaths and approximately 100 injuries. The ongoing exchange of fire highlights a persistent cycle of attacks that continues to dampen prospects for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, now in its fourth year. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on Friday that intelligence suggested Russia was preparing for a significant missile strike within the next 48 hours.
In other developments, a Ukrainian drone strike ignited a fire at the Tyumen Oil Refinery in western Siberia. President Zelenskyy confirmed this hit, as well as strikes on a logistics facility in Yekaterinburg and a fuel and lubricants warehouse in Rostov-on-Don. Such long-range drone technology has evolved throughout the war, presenting ongoing challenges for Russian defense efforts and contributing to fuel shortages.
Diplomatic activity remains active, with a White House official confirming that President Donald Trump and President Zelenskyy are scheduled to meet in Washington on Tuesday. Zelenskyy previously noted that his team was preparing for discussions with the U.S. President, coinciding with a memorial service for the late Sen. Lindsey Graham.
Separately, Romania reported a security incident involving a drone that breached its airspace near the Ukrainian border. The Romanian defense ministry stated that the drone was safely intercepted and shot down by a pilot flying an F-16 aircraft over an unpopulated area. This follows a similar incident on Friday near Padina, northeast of Bucharest. Romania and other NATO members have faced multiple drone incursions since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, including a May incident where a stray Russian drone damaged an apartment building in eastern Romania and a June event involving a Ukrainian maritime drone in the Black Sea port of Constanta.
