Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown entered a guilty plea on Friday to a charge of affray following a 2023 altercation at a London nightclub. The incident, which took place at the Tape nightclub in the Mayfair district on February 19, 2023, involved a physical confrontation that left a music producer injured. Brown, 37, appeared at London’s Southwark Crown Court to change his plea, moving away from his previous denial of more serious allegations.
In the wake of the guilty plea, prosecutors opted to drop several charges, including assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon—specifically a bottle. Brown’s associate, Omololu Akinlolu, who serves as his vocal coach, also entered a guilty plea for affray. The two men were initially scheduled to face trial this coming October.
Prosecutors detailed that the altercation was captured on surveillance footage within the crowded venue. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, the event was a “vicious and unprovoked attack” during which Brown struck the victim, Abraham Diaw, on the head with a glass bottle twice. Akinlolu was also accused of participating in the brawl by punching the victim in the head. Senior prosecutor Claire Campbell stated that the defendants' combined conduct constituted unlawful violence that would cause a person of reasonable firmness to fear for their safety. Campbell emphasized that such violence is unacceptable and that the authorities would continue to pursue cases to ensure no individual is above the law.
Following the 2023 brawl, Brown left the United Kingdom but was subsequently arrested in May 2025 at a Manchester hotel after arriving in the country for a concert performance. While Brown had been free on a 5 million pound ($6.7 million) bail bond—which permitted him to continue touring across North America and Europe last summer—he was released on bail again following Friday's hearing. He is scheduled to be sentenced on October 26, with the affray charge carrying a maximum potential penalty of three years in prison.
Upon departing the courthouse, Brown, dressed in a tan suit, gold-rimmed sunglasses, and a St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap, signed autographs for fans. Brown, who achieved fame as a teenager in 2005, has secured multiple Grammy awards, including best R&B album for “F.A.M.E.” in 2011 and for “11:11 (Deluxe)” in 2025. His history of legal issues includes a 2009 felony conviction for assaulting his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, and a 2013 misdemeanor assault charge for hitting a man outside a Washington, D.C., hotel. He has also faced various arrests across U.S. states and was questioned in Paris in 2019 regarding a rape allegation, though he was released without charge.
