Spain’s recent triumph in securing their second World Cup star has significantly elevated the international profile of the men’s national football team. In the months surrounding the tournament, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) successfully strengthened the team's connection with supporters worldwide through a meticulously developed communication strategy. This digital approach brought the daily life of the squad closer to millions of fans, resulting in a 31% increase in followers for the team's official social media accounts, @sefutbol, which gained 6.7 million new followers in just two months.
The RFEF’s digital strategy focused on constant communication, utilizing exclusive content to showcase the human side of the players. During the tournament, the federation adopted dynamic, emotionally engaging formats tailored for platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Viral posts, including tributes to Chattanooga and imagery of New York decorated in red ahead of the final, were instrumental in this growth. Standout content, such as the podcast La estrella que nos une and a dedicated World Cup vlog series, provided fans with deeper insights into the players' emotions and experiences.
Performance metrics underscore the success of this strategy. RFEF content generated 2.7 billion views on Instagram and more than 93 million interactions. Post-match interviews and title celebrations alone garnered over 25 million plays on Instagram. Specific visual identity updates also proved highly effective: the Campeones del Mundo post reached 316 million views, A la final achieved 137 million, and the trophy lift image recorded 81 million views. TikTok saw the fastest growth, with a 470% increase in views and 3.5 million new followers. Overall, the RFEF’s social media profiles reached a combined 34.3 million followers.
Between 25 May and 21 July, the national team's activities generated 11.5 million media mentions, resulting in 41.4 billion opportunities to view and an estimated advertising value equivalent (AVE) of €643 million. Beyond digital metrics, the RFEF facilitated extensive media access, organizing 215 one-to-one interviews, 245 flash interviews, 34 press conferences, and numerous mixed-zone appearances to support more than 215 accredited journalists.
Looking ahead, the RFEF and Prime Video are set to release a four-part docuseries in December detailing the team's historic journey. The project, which will be available in more than 200 countries, promises to reveal the story behind the second star with never-before-seen footage and exclusive interviews. The team confirmed the upcoming release on X, stating that the series will provide an intimate look at their championship run.
