Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has held discussions with US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to explore avenues for increased diplomatic engagement aimed at ending the ongoing war with Russia. Both the Ukrainian leadership and the White House confirmed that the telephone conversation took place on Wednesday, marking a potential shift in focus as US-brokered diplomacy had previously stalled while Washington concentrated on tensions involving Iran.
Expressing optimism regarding the dialogue, Zelenskyy stated on social media that it was a productive and significant conversation focused on how to reinvigorate diplomatic efforts to bring peace closer. He emphasized that Ukraine remains ready for a peace agreement, provided it is one characterized by dignity. Both parties have committed to maintaining close communication moving forward.
In a separate development, Zelenskyy met with the US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, in Kiev. Their discussion centered on securing licenses for the production of Patriot air defense systems. Zelenskyy described this as a critical priority, noting that Ukrainian skies require additional interceptor supplies to counter persistent, massive Russian attacks. The procurement is currently coordinated through the PURL scheme, a NATO- and US-backed initiative designed to manage the funding and delivery of armaments to Ukraine.
This push for domestic production follows a recent agreement made during the NATO summit in Türkiye, where President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States would grant Ukraine a license to manufacture Patriot missile interceptors. While Ukraine has successfully intensified its drone strikes against energy targets within Russia, strengthening air defenses remains the primary concern for the protection of Ukrainian urban centers.
