Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his French counterpart, Jean-Noel Barrot, engaged in a phone conversation to discuss a range of bilateral, regional, and international issues. The discussion took place as tensions between the two nations remained high, following a decision by Paris to summon Iran’s charge d’affaires regarding an incident involving French Embassy staff members in Tehran.
During the call, Araghchi formally protested what he characterized as the “unconventional actions” of two French diplomats, labeling their behavior as unacceptable. According to an official statement released by the Iranian foreign ministry on Tuesday, Araghchi emphasized that compliance with the host country’s laws and established international diplomatic norms is vital for the continued operation of foreign missions. He urged the French government to take necessary steps to prevent any repetition of such incidents.
The conversation occurred only hours after the French foreign ministry summoned Iran’s charge d’affaires to address what Paris described as an “extremely serious” act of intimidation. French foreign ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux stated that two embassy employees were detained and questioned by Iranian security services on Sunday, with one individual allegedly suffering physical assault. France condemned the event as a “flagrant violation” of international law and the Vienna Conventions, demanding that Iranian authorities investigate the matter, hold those responsible accountable, and guarantee the safety of all French diplomatic personnel.
In addition to the diplomatic dispute, Araghchi addressed the situation regarding the Strait of Hormuz. He asserted that the closure of the strait would be a “direct consequence” of what he described as US violations of its commitments under a framework plan accepted by both sides last month, alongside Washington’s “escalatory actions.” Araghchi maintained that the responsibility for any future consequences lies with the party that departed from the agreement, thereby endangering both regional stability and diplomatic efforts.
