U.S. officials have confirmed that nearly 100 American service members have been injured in a series of Iranian airstrikes targeting bases across the Middle East this month. Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell stated that these individuals were deemed to have sustained some degree of injury since July 7, 2026. According to the Pentagon, 96% of those affected have already returned to duty, with Parnell noting that the vast majority of these injuries were minor concussions. He added that the service members remain determined to continue their mission.
The surge in injuries follows a breakdown in the monthslong ceasefire between the United States and Iran. For over a week, the U.S. military has conducted nightly strikes on Iranian targets, citing a need to prevent Iran from attacking commercial shipping. In response, Iranian forces have targeted U.S. assets located in Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and other allied nations. Reports from Friday indicated that several U.S. personnel were injured on Jordanian military bases.
Over the weekend, the Defense Department reported that two American soldiers were killed on a military base in Jordan. Additionally, authorities discovered unidentified remains at a site where a third service member had gone missing. Another fatality occurred in Iraq during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone. Prior to these weekend events, the military's Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) had recorded 413 wounded in action since the start of the conflict, with 14 deaths, though these figures do not include the most recent casualties.
President Trump has publicly vowed to retaliate for the deaths in Iraq and Jordan. In a post on Truth Social, the President stated that Iran would pay for the killings many times over, confirming that he had issued this directive to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, and other military leadership. The White House also announced that President Trump intends to attend the dignified transfer of the fallen service members.
