A total of 11 people lost their lives overnight when the roof of a mud-brick house collapsed in northwest Pakistan. The fatal incident occurred in the Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to Bilal Faizi, a spokesperson for the provincial emergency service.
Rescuers successfully recovered the bodies of the 11 victims, who were reported to be mostly women and children. The remains have since been turned over to their families to conduct burials. This collapse follows a period of intense weather, as heavy monsoon rains also impacted the Gilgit-Baltistan region on Monday. Those downpours triggered multiple landslides, resulting in blocked roads and damage to residential properties throughout the area.
In response to the deteriorating weather conditions, the government has issued an advisory urging tourists to avoid traveling to northern Pakistan due to the ongoing risks of flash flooding and landslides. Pakistan frequently faces severe monsoon seasons that lead to widespread destruction and loss of life. The country remains particularly vulnerable to such events, highlighted by the 2022 monsoon season, which saw nearly one-third of the nation submerged, resulting in 1,739 deaths and approximately $30 billion in damages.
