EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen warned on Friday that commercial jet fuel supplies in Europe might face a worsening situation throughout the summer months. While maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been steadily increasing since June 15, Jorgensen emphasized that energy markets will require significant time to fully recover from recent disruptions.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global artery that typically handles approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas exports. The previous halt in the flow of crude and oil products from the Gulf region triggered immediate jet fuel shortages across Asia, raising concerns about the availability of fuel in Europe during the peak summer travel period.
Jorgensen stated that the destruction of infrastructure within the region means that returning to normal levels for oil will take months, while gas supplies could take years to stabilize. Regarding the immediate outlook, the Commissioner noted that by the end of the summer, the situation regarding commercial stocks will likely become more serious.
To mitigate these risks, Jorgensen indicated that EU nations might need to release existing jet fuel supplies to prevent potential shortages. He confirmed that officials are actively monitoring the situation to ensure energy security during this period of volatility.
