Hundreds of firefighters are currently engaged in a massive operation to contain a series of blazes in south-east Spain, following one of the country’s most severe wildfire disasters. Emergency services are concentrated around the village of Bedar, where at least 12 fatalities have been confirmed. Among the deceased are four British nationals, according to local authorities. Additionally, 23 people remain missing, and officials in the Los Gallardos area of Almería have cautioned that the death toll could climb further, with fears that more UK citizens may be among the victims.
The rapid spread of the fire on Thursday afternoon was fueled by a combination of powerful winds, extremely dry conditions, and a sustained heatwave that has gripped Southern Europe with temperatures hovering around 40C (104F). Antonio Sanz, the health and emergencies minister for Andalusia, reported on Saturday that the blaze has consumed 6,600 hectares (16,300 acres) of land. While the fire’s origin has been attributed to a fallen power line, local electricity companies have formally denied this claim.
Regarding the four victims discovered inside a burnt-out vehicle, Sanz noted that they are believed to be of British origin, citing the car’s right-hand drive configuration. No further identity details have been released by Spanish authorities or the Foreign Office in London. Lucinda Curtois, a holidaymaker who arrived in the region on Thursday, described the scene as “unbelievably quick,” comparing the smoke cloud to an explosion. She expressed fears that at least two other British nationals had perished after seemingly leaving their homes on foot, potentially due to blocked roads.
Local officials in Bedar suggested that some victims may have failed to follow recommended evacuation routes, though it remains unclear how effectively this guidance was communicated to the public. Minister Sanz indicated that the complex nature of the fire suggested many, if not all, of the victims could be foreign nationals. On a more positive note, he added: “This is the first day we will be able to mount a direct attack on the fire. Until now, weather conditions and the behaviour of the blaze only allowed us to work defensively.”
