Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate Sony Group Corp. announced a significant financial boost on Thursday, reporting a 44% surge in profit for the July-September quarter. The company’s total profit reached 449.6 billion yen ($2.8 billion) during this period, marking a substantial increase from the nearly 311 billion yen recorded in the same quarter a year earlier. Alongside the profit growth, quarterly sales for the Tokyo-based company edged up 10% to 3.4 trillion yen.
A primary driver for this strong performance was the box office success of the movie, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Beyond its cinematic achievements, the company noted that continuing strong demand for its PlayStation game consoles played a key role in boosting the bottom line. Sony, which maintains a diverse portfolio including the Walkman portable audio player, Xperia smartphones, and Bravia TV sets, continues to navigate industry-wide challenges, specifically a computer chip shortage stemming from the artificial intelligence boom.
Despite these supply chain hurdles, Sony has benefited from the weakness of the Japanese yen, a trend common among large Japanese exporters. The depreciation of the yen increases the value of the company’s overseas earnings when converted back into the local currency. Recently, the U.S. dollar has been trading at approximately 158 Japanese yen, compared to about 154 yen a year ago.
Reflecting confidence in its financial trajectory, Sony has raised its profit forecast for the full fiscal year ending in March 2027 to 1.3 trillion yen, up from an earlier projection of 1.2 trillion yen. This new target represents an improvement over the 1 trillion yen net profit the company achieved in the previous fiscal year. Investors reacted positively to the news, with Sony's shares closing 7% higher in Tokyo trading shortly before the financial results were officially announced.
Like other technology companies, Sony is facing the problem of a computer chip shortage because of the artificial intelligence boom.
