An aircraft operated by the European Union’s peacekeeping force in Bosnia and Herzegovina crashed in the country’s north on Thursday, resulting in three fatalities and 12 injuries. The EU-led mission, known as EUFOR Althea, confirmed the incident in a formal statement, noting that a number of personnel were killed or injured. According to local media reports, the aircraft involved was an Italian CH-47 Chinook helicopter that went down near the town of Brcko.
Brcko District Mayor Sinisa Milic provided details to the Bosnian Serb broadcaster RTRS, confirming the death toll of three and reporting that 12 individuals received medical treatment. Among those injured, one person remains in critical condition. Photographs published by the Bosnian news portal Klix depict the wreckage of the helicopter lying on a lawn following the crash.
EUFOR officials stated that no civilian infrastructure, property, or vehicles were damaged, and confirmed that no civilians were injured during the event. While an investigation into the cause of the crash is currently underway, the mission noted that further information will be released as it becomes available.
The EUFOR Althea mission has maintained a presence in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 2004, when it assumed responsibilities from NATO to preserve security and oversee the military provisions of the peace agreement that concluded the 1992–1995 war. Operating under a United Nations Security Council mandate, the mission currently consists of approximately 1,200 soldiers tasked with supporting a safe and secure environment in the country.
