Iliana Iotova Leads Bulgaria Presidential Race After First Round

Bulgaria's President Iliana Iotova secured a narrow lead in the first round of the presidential election on Sunday, according to exit poll data. Results indicate Iotova garnered between 35 and 36.5 percent of the vote. She is set to compete in a November 1 runoff against runner-up Andrey Gyurov, a banker and former caretaker prime minister who received between 32.2 and 32.5 percent of the vote according to three separate polls.

The election occurs as the conflict in Ukraine increasingly impacts the waters off Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. Although the presidency in Bulgaria is largely ceremonial, the current vote has gained significant attention following a series of drone attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea. These strikes, which are believed to have caused the deaths of approximately two dozen international seafarers, have drawn international condemnation and heightened concerns regarding the security of regional maritime routes. The Bulgarian government has sought assistance from its allies to bolster maritime security in response to the incidents.

While Bulgaria has not directly attributed the ship attacks to Russia, Prime Minister Rumen Radev noted that the outcome of these strikes “benefits the Russian Federation.” Both presidential candidates have condemned the attacks, yet they maintain differing views on the wider war. Gyurov, supported by pro-Western and reformist parties, has demonstrated long-standing support for Ukraine, having signed a security cooperation agreement with Kiev during his tenure as caretaker prime minister. Conversely, Iotova—who served as vice president before becoming acting president in January following Radev's resignation to pursue a successful parliamentary bid—is supported by Radev. Both Iotova and Radev have advocated for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing war.
