Independent Australian lawmaker Helen Haines is in critical condition following a deliberate car attack that occurred outside her electorate office in Wangaratta on Monday. The incident took place in the regional city located just over 200 kilometres northwest of Melbourne. Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason confirmed that the 65-year-old parliamentarian suffered what have been described as critical injuries, though officials did not formally name the victim in line with standard police customs in Australia.

A 43-year-old male driver was detained by bystanders at the scene before being taken into custody by responding officers. Police reported that they discovered a knife inside the suspect's vehicle. While the motive for the attack remains unknown, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that Australia's counter-terrorism squad has been activated to assist in the investigation.

Describing the event as a deliberate act rather than an accident, Prime Minister Albanese expressed his support for Haines, her family, her friends, her team, and her community during this difficult period. He stated, "All of our thoughts are with Helen, her family, her friends, her team, and her community at this extremely difficult time. We are praying for her full recovery." Speaking to the national broadcaster ABC, Albanese praised Haines as an incredibly hardworking and intelligent individual who is a "thoroughly decent human being."

The incident has intensified concerns regarding the safety of political figures in Australia. The Australian Federal Police recently established a dedicated unit to investigate threats and abuse directed at lawmakers, noting a consistent rise in such incidents. The Prime Minister remarked that the "temperature has increased in recent times," expressing his concerns that social media platforms have fostered a level of hostility that would not occur in face-to-face interactions. He noted that he has expressed these concerns to members of the media.

Haines, who entered parliament in 2019 following a career as a nurse and midwife, is widely recognized for her advocacy on climate action and her efforts to improve political transparency and combat corruption. Her family released a statement confirming she is receiving medical care and expressed gratitude to the bystanders and health workers who provided immediate assistance, as well as the police for their response. The family requested that their privacy and that of her staff be respected at this time.

"I've expressed that concern to people in the media," he said.
