The individual competition at the World Judo Championships in Baku has officially concluded, with the heavyweight categories taking center stage in Azerbaijan to close out the event. Before the final matches commenced, a traditional flag-passing ceremony took place, marking the transition of the International Judo Federation flag from Azerbaijan to Kazakhstan, which is set to host the 2027 World Championships.

In the women's +78kg division, 19-year-old Hyeonji Lee delivered a dominant performance throughout the day. Having earned a World bronze medal last year, Lee entered the competition with confidence and secured an ippon in every contest leading up to the final. She faced Romane Dicko, a former World Champion who was looking to reclaim the mantle and secure her second world title. Despite Dicko’s display of technical groundwork, Lee maintained her momentum, besting her opponent with a waza-ari that transitioned into a decisive hold-down. This victory marks the most significant title of the Korean athlete's career. IOC Member Ms. Yael Arad presented the medals for this category.

The men's +100kg category featured reigning double World Champion Inal Tasoev, who arrived in Baku aiming for his third world title. Tasoev appeared in complete control throughout the draw, arriving in the final as a powerful and assured favorite. His opponent, Azerbaijan’s own Ushangi Kokauri, sought to turn the energy of the home crowd into the biggest victory of his career. While the roar from the stands provided pressure, Tasoev remained composed and delivered a moment of pure judo to score an ippon, securing his third World Championship title. This commanding finish ensures Tasoev will wear the red backpatch for another year. Azerbaijan Minister of Youth and Sport Mr. Farid Gayibov awarded the medals. The event in Baku is scheduled to continue tomorrow with the start of the Mixed Team competition.
