Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Germany has committed a new support package valued at more than €1.3 billion, equivalent to $1.46 billion, following discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The assistance aims to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities and secure its energy sector ahead of the winter months.
In a statement released on the social media platform X, President Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of the aid, noting that it includes essential weaponry and energy infrastructure support. He highlighted that the discussions also focused on the critical need for enhanced air defense systems. Chancellor Merz, who arrived in the Ukrainian capital on Sunday morning for an unannounced visit, delivered a message of steadfast support, stating, "You can rely on us."
Beyond the immediate aid package, the two leaders oversaw the signing of 15 agreements and documents. These arrangements primarily focus on security cooperation, defense procurement, production orders for the German industrial sector, and various joint projects within Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian president, the total value of these collective agreements exceeds €8.5 billion. Furthermore, the countries have reached a separate agreement to expand cooperation on joint efforts to counter drone threats.
In a separate development, President Zelenskyy informed reporters that the United States is actively working to facilitate a new round of trilateral talks between the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia. The proposed goal is to organize a meeting at the technical level by the end of October to discuss potential pathways toward ending the ongoing four-and-a-half-year war.
