Trump Announces Immediate White House Ban for Three Media Outlets

President Donald Trump has announced that he is barring three prominent news organizations—CNN, MS NOW, and Politico—from the White House, effective immediately. The president accused these outlets of consistently reporting “fake news,” “fiction,” and “lies” regarding his administration, though he did not provide specific examples to support these claims.

The announcement, made via a post on the Truth Social platform this past Friday, also included a warning that these restrictions could potentially be expanded to include other media organizations. While the exact implications of the ban remain unclear, questions have arisen regarding the status of CNN, which is one of the traditional five-network television pool members that accompanies the president for coverage. It has not yet been confirmed how this new policy will impact that established arrangement.

This is not the first time the administration has restricted media access. In 2025, President Trump limited the Associated Press’s access to specific presidential events after the agency continued to use the term “Gulf of Mexico” instead of the president's preferred “Gulf of America.” That move led to ongoing legal action initiated by the AP. Additionally, during Trump’s first term, CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins was barred from a Rose Garden event after officials deemed her earlier questions to the president “inappropriate.”

While barring entire news organizations from the White House is considered an extremely rare move for a U.S. president, there have been historical precedents for placing restrictions on individual outlets. Notably, President Richard Nixon restricted access for The Washington Post during the 1970s amidst the Watergate scandal.
