As anticipation builds for the 2028 presidential election, a new poll released this month by YouGov and Bowling Green State University indicates that the race could feature a high-profile showdown between current and former vice presidents. The survey, which polled 1,200 likely voters between August 25 and September 1, identifies former Vice President Kamala Harris and current Vice President JD Vance as the frontrunners in their respective party primaries.
While both candidates are showing strength among their primary bases, the Democratic field appears to be significantly more competitive. In contrast, the Republican race shows a clearer frontrunner, with Vice President JD Vance comfortably leading the field at 44% support. Secretary of State Marco Rubio follows in second place with 21%, while Donald Trump Jr. holds 8% of the support. The poll carries a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
The prospect of a 2028 run has prompted several potential candidates to address their political intentions. California Governor Gavin Newsom recently clarified his position during a fishing trip in Montana with CNN’s Jake Tapper. When asked about his own presidential ambitions should Kamala Harris enter the race, Newsom stated he would not compete against her. “I don’t know if she runs, but we’ll see,” Newsom told Tapper. “I wouldn’t run if she ran.”
On the Republican side, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas has also fueled speculation regarding a potential bid. During an appearance on a podcast hosted by Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick in August, Cruz acknowledged his long-term goal, stating, “It’s no secret that I want to be president.”
Meanwhile, Marco Rubio has attempted to dampen speculation about his own potential candidacy, though he did not issue a definitive rejection. During an official visit to Colombia, Rubio was questioned about whether he might seek the White House after the conclusion of President Donald Trump's second term. “I don't know what the future holds, but I have no plans at this time,” Rubio said. “I'm not a candidate for anything right now. And I’m 100% focused on my job, and I have to be because I have two jobs.”
