A historic island in the northern Venetian lagoon, featuring a restored military fort from the Napoleonic era, has been placed on the market. Known as Crevan, the private island is located just a few minutes by boat from the neighboring islands of Burano and Torcello. While the asking price remains strictly confidential, the property offers a unique blend of military history and modern luxury.
Slightly smaller than a standard football pitch, Crevan was originally established in 1806 by the French military. It was designed as a strategic defensive outpost to protect the lagoon from the Austrian empire. However, the island's geopolitical status shifted repeatedly over the next several decades. In 1815, it fell under Austrian control, and in 1866, it was transferred to the Italian state following the annexation of Veneto to the Kingdom of Italy. The island maintained its military function until the conclusion of the First World War.
Following a long period of abandonment and neglect, a private buyer acquired Crevan and restored its structures for residential use. The island's central feature is its historic Napoleonic fort, which the current owner transformed into a small, four-bedroom villa. The residence is surrounded by manicured lawns, trees, and gardens growing vegetables and fruit. Additionally, the property features a helipad and a private mooring situated along a small internal canal.
Crevan is not the only historic defense site currently available in the region. Another octagonal-shaped island located near the Venice lido is also on the market. That property dates back to the 1500s, when it was constructed as a defensive fortification by the Republic of Venice.
