One of the primary resources is StartWien, a free support program designed specifically for new residents. This initiative provides newcomers with a space to ask questions in their native language and offers guidance on locating appropriate German courses. Additionally, participants can access the StartWien KonversationsKlub, which serves as a platform for practicing German language skills.
Eligibility for the StartWien program is restricted to individuals holding a valid first residence permit. This includes various third-country permits, EU/EEA/Swiss categories, and Article 50 Brexit residence permits, along with the corresponding registration certificates. The program explicitly excludes tourists, students, pupils, and those with short-term residence permits, as well as refugees.
While German language courses are not universally free in Vienna, there are several avenues for funding and free practice. Eligible members of AK Wien can access an education voucher worth €150, which is applicable toward further education, including language courses. Furthermore, individuals may qualify for an additional €150 Digi-Bonus for specific digitalization courses. Higher funding amounts are also available for those catching up on apprenticeship qualifications or for certain parents currently on parental leave.
