Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has officially labeled the team's maiden Test victory on Australian soil as the most significant milestone in their cricketing history. The historic result was secured in Darwin on Sunday, where Bangladesh defeated Australia by nine wickets to complete a remarkable upset. Chasing a target of 57 runs, the visitors reached the goal on the fourth afternoon, with Mominul Haque hitting the winning runs after bowling Australia out for 284 in their second innings.
Reflecting on the triumph, Shanto emphasized that while the team has achieved notable wins across all three formats, this specific performance stands above the rest due to the collective hard work and dominance shown from the very first day. He noted that the team played very good cricket across all four days of the match. Shanto stated that his Man of the Match, to be very honest, is the entire Bangladesh team because, if you see, everyone contributed in some way or the other.
He highlighted the contributions of the entire squad, specifically praising Hasan Mahmud’s nine-wicket match haul, Tanzid Hasan Tamim’s maiden Test century in only his second match, and the all-round performance of Mehidy Hasan Miraz. He also made a point to credit the lower-order batters, including Taijul Islam, Taskin Ahmed, and Ebadot Hossain, whose contributions he deemed vital to the team's success. He emphasized that as a developing Test side, they prefer to focus on a series-by-series and match-by-match basis.
He also addressed the team's poor performance in the preceding warm-up game, where they were bowled out for 54 by Cricket Australia XI, characterizing it as a necessary preparation period that helped identify and address critical shortcomings.
