At least 22 people were killed on Sunday when a bus collided with a truck on one of Kenya's primary highways, according to police reports. The passengers involved in the crash were reportedly returning from a funeral at the time of the incident. Several other individuals sustained injuries in the morning collision and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Makueni County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif stated that the death toll could potentially rise as the situation develops. While the exact circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear, authorities noted that speeding and poor road conditions have historically been contributing factors in Kenyan road accidents.

This tragedy occurred on the main highway linking the capital, Nairobi, with the coastal city of Mombasa. The location of the crash is particularly significant as it sits near the site of a previous fatal accident just three weeks ago, which resulted in 17 deaths. Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority has officially designated this stretch of the highway as an “accident black spot” and confirmed that recommendations had previously been made to address safety concerns in the area.
