The 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier is officially scheduled to take place from February 22 to March 23 next year. While the International Cricket Council (ICC) has finalized these dates, the specific host venue for the tournament has not yet been determined.
This event serves as a critical gateway to the 14-team 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be hosted across 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia from October 4 to November 11. Under the revamped tournament structure, the winner of the 10-team Qualifier will secure direct entry into the main group of the World Cup. Teams finishing second, third, and fourth in the Qualifier will move on to a first-round competition known as the Super Series, where the top-performing side will earn a spot in the 12-team main stage.
The 10-team Qualifier lineup will consist of the two bottom-ranked Full Members in the ODI rankings as of September 30, 2026—excluding the hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe—alongside the top four teams from CWC League 2 and the top four teams from a World Cup Qualifier Playoff. The Playoff itself will feature the bottom four teams from CWC League 2 and four teams from the third-division Challenge League. The Challenge League consists of 12 teams divided into two pools of six, with the top two from each pool advancing to the Playoff stage.
The qualification path remains highly competitive, particularly for the West Indies. Currently ranked 10th, the West Indies have only two ODIs remaining before the September 30, 2026, cut-off date, both against India in September. Their prospects depend heavily on the upcoming series between Afghanistan, ranked 8th, and Ireland, ranked 12th. If Ireland wins that series 4-1 or 5-0, the West Indies could potentially climb into the top eight with two victories. Conversely, if Afghanistan wins the series, it is highly likely the West Indies will be forced to participate in the Qualifier. The West Indies previously missed out on the 2023 ODI World Cup following a Super Over defeat to the Netherlands in the Harare Qualifier.
