Relatives, friends, and community members gathered in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, on Tuesday to hold the funeral for a mother and her two young daughters who were found dead at their home in Britain. The service featured white coffins and was marked by what speakers described as “unspeakable grief.”
The victims were 42-year-old Nothabo Zandile Tshuma, 15-year-old Natalie, and 5-year-old Nala. British police discovered their bodies at their residence near Bedford, north of London, on July 7 after family members raised concerns when they were unable to contact the household. A subsequent inquest determined that all three victims had died from head injuries.
During the funeral service, family spokesperson Theophilus Khumalo addressed the mourners, referring to the children as “God’s little flowers.” He noted that the mother had held dreams of seeing her children grow into confident, educated, and God-loving women, adding, “Their departure has created a silence so deep that only the voice of God can comfort it.” The family previously characterized the tragedy as “an unbearably painful journey.”
The husband and father of the victims, 45-year-old Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma, was arrested in Johannesburg, South Africa, last month. The arrest followed a joint operation involving Interpol and local South African police. He is currently facing charges in South Africa related to the unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm, which authorities believe he intended to use to take his own life. The father, a British citizen, now faces murder charges in connection with the deaths, and South African courts are set to consider a request for his extradition to the United Kingdom.
