Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has officially dismissed his ambassador to the United States, Olga Stefanishyna, via a decree issued on Monday. The decision follows a broader government reshuffle that took place last month.
The leadership change arrives at a critical juncture for Kyiv, which is currently lobbying Washington for additional Patriot air defense missiles to counter Russian strikes. The role of ambassador is considered vital for Ukraine, as the nation relies heavily on U.S. arms shipments and intelligence-sharing to sustain its defense efforts against Russia.
In a post on Facebook, Stefanishyna shared a letter requesting to be relieved of her duties, stating that the decision was her own and was “dictated by personal circumstances.” She described her time in Washington as “the greatest honour” of her life. Reflecting on her tenure, she noted that her team managed to increase the supply of American weaponry and maintain support during a period when the political climate in Washington was shifting.
Stefanishyna, who previously served as a deputy prime minister and justice minister, was nominated for the ambassadorial role in July of last year. While no formal accusations have been filed, Ukrainian media outlets have reported that she is currently under investigation by the country’s anti-corruption agency on suspicion of wrongdoing.
The relationship between Zelenskyy and U.S. counterpart Donald Trump has historically been strained and, at times, volatile. However, the former U.S. president and billionaire businessman has recently shown a more encouraging attitude toward the Ukrainian leader. President Zelenskyy has not yet announced a successor to fill the vacancy in Washington.
