A US service member was killed in action on July 18 while performing a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone in northern Iraq, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed. The incident, which occurred on July 17, also left a second service member wounded during the operation; they are currently receiving medical treatment for a minor injury.
In a separate update, CENTCOM addressed the aftermath of Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks that occurred in Jordan on Friday. Those attacks resulted in the deaths of two US service members and left a third individual missing. Following a thorough search of the area, US military personnel discovered unidentified remains at the scene on July 18. The command noted that an examination process to verify the identity of the remains is currently underway.
CENTCOM stated that it is withholding the identities of both the deceased and the missing service members to respect their families during the official notification process.
