The US military confirmed the death of another service member in Iraq on Saturday, stating the individual was killed during a “controlled detonation” of a downed Iranian drone. This incident occurred as the United States launched a new wave of airstrikes against Iran on Sunday, marking the second week of renewed fire exchanges between the two nations.
The latest military operation targeted Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard in retaliation for the killing of American troops in Jordan last Friday. Following that attack, one service member had been reported missing; officials stated on Sunday that “unidentified remains” were recovered and are currently undergoing examination. Since the current conflict began, 17 US service members have been killed.
Central Command reported that the recent strikes hit Iranian military coastal surveillance, air defense facilities, maritime capabilities, and various missile and drone storage sites. The US military stated these actions were intended to degrade Iran’s control over the strait and to punish the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which manages the nation’s ballistic missile arsenal. Footage released by the military showed strikes executed by fighter jets and sea-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles, with some targets situated within mountainous terrain.
In a separate development, Iranian state television reported that US strikes hit the construction site of a planned nuclear power plant in the country's southwest. Satellite imagery from Planet Labs PBC taken on 9 July showed earth clearing at the Darkhovin site, though little construction was visible. The International Atomic Energy Agency noted that the site was in the very early stages of development and contained no nuclear material during their last visit.
The conflict continues to trigger regional security responses, with Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain activating air defenses to intercept incoming Iranian missiles and drones. Israel issued warnings that missiles launched toward Jordan could potentially spill over into Israeli territory. Meanwhile, the broader economic impact of the war has resulted in rising prices for fuel and essential goods, affecting vulnerable populations globally.
The renewed exchanges of fire, now in their second week, have seen the US target bridges, water desalination plants and electrical facilities in Iran. Tehran has hit US-allied countries throughout the Middle East.
