US Navy Aircraft Transits Taiwan Strait Ahead of Xi-Trump Talks

A United States Navy P-8A Poseidon aircraft has transited the Taiwan Strait, an operation that the US 7th Fleet described as a demonstration of the United States' commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The US military maintains that it flies, sails, and operates anywhere international law allows, with the 7th Fleet noting in a statement that the mission upholds the navigational rights and freedoms of all nations.

The Chinese military tracked and monitored the patrol and reconnaissance aircraft throughout the duration of the transit. According to a report by the state-backed Global Times, which cited a military source, the Chinese authorities considered the situation to be under control. While US military vessels and aircraft regularly pass through the waterway between Taiwan and China every few months, these missions consistently draw criticism from Beijing.

This transit occurs as tensions remain high, with Chinese President Xi Jinping expected to visit the United States next month for a meeting with President Donald Trump. Both Washington and Beijing are currently working to stabilize their bilateral ties, which have been strained by various issues, including trade disputes, technology curbs, and the status of Taiwan.

China maintains that Taiwan is a breakaway province and has never ruled out the use of force to bring the island under its governance. Beijing further asserts that it holds jurisdiction over the Taiwan Strait and has repeatedly declared that the Taiwan issue is an internal affair, representing a core interest and a red line that must not be crossed. Conversely, both Taiwan and the United States categorize the strait as an international waterway.
