Officials stated that the security environment remains complex, noting the potential for unforeseen escalation in the region.
The advisory urges Americans currently in the Middle East to remain vigilant and prepare for potential flight cancellations, temporary airspace closures, and other travel-related disruptions. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring security alerts from American embassies and consulates, adhering to guidance from local authorities, and keeping track of news reports. Furthermore, the State Department has advised Americans outside of the Middle East to reconsider travel to or through the region.
According to the department, US diplomatic facilities globally have been targeted in the past. The statement cautioned that Iran, along with groups supportive of Iran, may target other US interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and its citizens worldwide.
Regional instability has intensified since the US and Israel launched a joint war against Iran in February, leading to Iranian retaliation in the form of drone and missile strikes against Gulf nations that host US assets. Although the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding last month—mediated by Pakistan—to end the conflict and establish a lasting peace, those efforts have been strained. Tensions flared again last week over the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides engaging in a new exchange of attacks.
